NZCEE Logo

NZCEE’s logo is the harekeke or native flax, phormium tenax. It was selected as our logo as it is rich in symbolism for NZCEE. Harekeke is also of economic and ecological value for New Zealand, which nicely symbolises the focus of NZCEE. It is of ecological value as it provides habitat for many species including the tui and native insects, as well as providing critical ecological services such as riperian planting and shelter. Harekeke played an important role in the New Zealand economy up until the 1970s as it was the raw material for cordage and textiles products. There are indications that this role will continue in the future with harakeke being a potential source of raw materials for pharmaceuticals. Harakeke is important to both Maori and Pakeha. Its long green leaves provide a strong fibre that Maori use for weaving and plaiting. In addition, the harakeke is particularly important in our local region, the Manawatu-Horowhenua, as it was used in the textile industry, which led to early economic development here.
